Crazy Ivan, Astronautical
Written by Rob Quillen

Some hard-nosed, modern music critics say that the flailing, crotch-crunching, note stuffed, extended guitar solo-filled, pop-metal days have gone the way of the extinct flannel-wearing pretty boys who look like they could kick in your teeth and give your sister eyeliner tips. Hailing from a small Northern California town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the members of Crazy Ivan are neither glamorous pretty-boys nor pierced, leather clad crotch-crunchers. They do, however, boast a guitar laden, powerfully articulated 80's-esque blues, pop-metal sound with incredible finesse, solidifying the idea that, in this day and age, diversity is a welcome exit from the modern "one-sound-per-band" phenomena, and that the doors are open for many styles to succeed. The liner photos could easily be the covers for "how-to" instructional videotapes, brandishing all of the band's equipment, brand names shining visibly in the forefront, but one listen will demonstrate the musical aptitude this trio of seasoned pros has accomplished.
Opening Astronautical is the tune "All Systems Go" kicked off with an acoustic riff that you'll be humming in the car on your way to the DMV no matter how many parking tickets you've blown off. Co-lead singer and drummer Jim E. Anderson, sounding somewhere between King's X and The Allman Brothers, applies an emotion you can't help but believe in. He really means it! His tight, simply structured drum accompaniments create the proper space for a nicely arranged song, and for a singing drummer to perform live. Good work!
Other potential hit contender includes "Life Is A Movie" featuring co-lead singer and virtuoso guitarist Greg E. Noll at the mic. Both vocalists exhibit unique and impressive command of their tonsils and their voices blend beautifully. Crazy Ivan has created a pleasurable listening experience with Astronautical, strewn with nearly too perfect harmonies and dramatic chord progressions, it's an expressive collection of metallic blues pop presented with conviction and talent.

California's Crazy Ivan, have released their latest effort, Astronautical, which features twelve original and energizing tracks. This three-piece band combines styles from many different musical genres including basic rock, pop, blues, jazz, funk, southern rock, and even hard rock into a talented blend of musicianship that approaches each song from a different angle. The guitar work on the album, done by Greg E. Noll, is excellent and uses both melodic rhythms (even acoustic in some songs) and complicated solos to give the music a rich sound. Providing that underlying low groove is bassist, Bob Hufman, along with drummer, Jim E. Anderson, who displays his experienced percussion techniques throughout the whole CD, while also contributing vocally, as all three members do. This disc is very enjoyable, easy to listen to, and pleasing to the ear. There is enough variety throughout the tracks to keep the sound interesting for everyone, from very young to even the oldest listener. They write music that is fun, but also emotional and meaningful all the way through. I would certainly recommend Astronautical as an addition to any CD collection, it is guaranteed not to disappoint!

BEST BAND TO HIT THE THIS SCENE--EVER!!
29 Jul 2000
From: "Darren R."
Hi Guys! I saw your show at the Mother Lode Fair and I also know Greg (I play guitar too). Anyway, I bought your album there, had you guys sign it and it ROCKS!! IT KICKS YOU KNOW WHAT MY FRIENDS!! I have been listening to it over and over again and it is so solid, sharp and crisp with the direction that every song takes, that I think every one on the planet needs a copy. (Couldn't agree more Darren!, JEA) Your playing is very professional, very tight and with a distinct sound all it's own--not to mention very diverse (love that!!). Anyway, just wanted to drop you guys a line and say you are my numero uno band here!!:). All My Best and Hope to see you play in the near future! Cheers!

ALL SYSTEMS GO (WORDS: J. ANDERSON/ MUSIC: G. NOLL) They weren't looking back in anger or cowered down in fear They were searchin' for the truth With the new age drawing near They weren't thinking of the danger or concerned about the blame They were seeking kinder spirits back along the way they came While the bombs just kept on dropping Their hearts were in despair They tried to talk in disagreement But the conversation went nowhere You can't lean out the window, flying in the cargo bay Got to keep yourself together When the world gets in your way All systems go, it's not what you have or who you know You've got a preflight checklist, baby For the love you're gonna show They were clutching all the promises Of white hope that they could take They were dreaming of the new world And the changes they would make But the simple life idea just won't go away Falling on their techno face They can't forget the time, can't forget the place

WOMEN NEED A REASON (WORDS AND MUSIC: G. NOLL) Are you gonna give me satisfaction? Are you gonna let me sweep you off your feet? I need to know if you're gonna take me down a road to nowhere Your nectar ain't gonna last long in this heat And how I'll love you in the morning when it's over Baby, I don't wanna see you cry Don't leave me stuck between a hard place and a boulder Can't you see, I'm not that kind of guy... Good girl runs the relay while the bad boy Grabs the prize He tells her that he loves her while he looks Into her eyes The facts are elemental, meditation is a waste Women need a reason, men just need a place So you say you're gonna give me satisfaction But you wanna put a leash around my neck I'll tell ya, honey, what I think you wanna hear over 'n' over All in my best interest, you can bet Just close your eyes and don't think about tomorrow Here and now is all that we've got Happy ever after is much too much to swallow Don't pretend we're something that we're not Good girl wants forever, but the boy Just wants tonight Whispering sweet nothings so she won't Put up a fight The facts are elemental, contemplation is a waste Women need a reason, men just need a place You can't spend one more lonely weekend all by yourself You're only happy when you're sleeping With your trophies all lined up on the shelf...

AMANDA LEE (WORDS: G. NOLL/ J. ANDERSON. MUSIC: G. NOLL) I tried to remember my reasons for falling in love Twice last september I thought that I'd fixed on "the one" Mind on my business, when suddenly she caught my eye Hearts the world over, are breaking when Mandy walks by She takes one look at me, and all of my fear falls away I'm in her spell so deep that nothing can stand in our way Amanda Lee, you're drivin' me crazy Without your love my heart would be lost I can't believe how long I have waited To find the girl with the runaway heart She's got my attention, I couldn't give anything less When Mandy's near me, emotions are put to the test Her love is poison, so pure and so sweet on the tongue One kiss could kill you, or render you forever young Run away, run away, run away She's the girl with the runaway heart

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE (WORDS: G. NOLL & B. HUFMAN/ MUSIC: G.NOLL) On a cold Sunday morning, all alone in my room No word from you, baby, I don't know what to do I waited all night long for a glimpse of your face You told me you'd be there, but you're gone without a trace I should've known better, should have seen it in your eyes You gave me your promise, now I know, I know what your promise buys Bein' with you was a cruel twist of fate It was always too little - always too little, too late I gave you everything - my soul, my heart It's always too little, too late You stole my love from me - tore me apart It's always too little, too late Am I losin' my patience, or have I lost my mind? My only salvation would be leavin' you behind I finally see you for the devil that you are You crucified me, and ripped out my heart Now I know - life after you is a wound that never heals So cold and lonely, but you don't know how that feels My life with you, baby, was a cruel twist of fate It was always too little - always too little, too late Too little... too late... So lonely... won't wait...

LOOKIN' FOR YOUR LOVE (WORDS & MUSIC: J. ANDERSON) Well, you say that you need me, and I know You don't believe me when I tell you that I need you too You say I broke my promise, girl the truth could never harm us Can't you see that I'm here for you But if you're filled with mistrust, and you feel that you must Find your way out, that's what you gotta do It's alright, I'll fight my way back to your heart It's late, I can't wait for the playback to start It's like tryin' to find a needle in a haystack Lookin' for your love Caught up in your suspicion, but not by your admission I've taken all that I can take You've got a heart full of sorrow that's waitin' on tomorrow And trouble is all you'll make So forgive, don't forget me, live and let live me Love you girl, it's not too late And I'm lookin', yeah, yeah, and I'm lookin' And I'm lookin' - lookin' for your love...

MOVE ON UP (WORDS & MUSIC: J. ANDERSON) If you feel alright, celebrate If your head is light, I know that you can't wait Feel the motion overtake you, Like an ocean, it will awake you Better Move On Up, better Move On Up Cause if you're down, it ain't no good Get on up, feel like you should Shake your shoulder, swivel your hip, Come on baby, let it all slip Better Move On Up, it's alright Better Move On Up, get it tight Why will you, why won't you? Why do you, why don't you? Baby, baby, yeah baby Better Move On Up Your money is power, Your power is pain Work all your life, you might go insane, go insane, go insane, Or worse Die when you're ready, you're gonna leave it all behind Runnin' 'round, bet you're runnin''round- Tryin' to find your peace of mind, peace of mind Now you got it in your soul Feel your body move and take control Let it flow out naturally Might make you wanna holler, make you wanna scream Might make you wanna holler, make you wanna scream It might might make you wanna holler Better Move On Up, it's alright Better Move On Up, get it tight Why will you, why won't you? Why do you, why don't you? Baby, baby, baby, baby Yeah yeah, baby, come on girl, Oh baby Better Move On Up

(CAN'T SEEM TO) SAY GOODBYE (WORDS & MUSIC: G. NOLL) It rained the day you went away And it's raining somewhere now So many things I never got the chance to say I wonder what your life would be If you had stuck around I saw your son just the other day You can't believe how he has grown I see so much of you in his face God, how the time - the time has surely flown There's nothing anyone can say No magic words can make it right But, like the thunder on that day I still hear "the voice" in my mind There's a rose on your chair in the corner, now And a big, heavy cloud in the sky I can't stop the rain from coming down And I can't seem to make myself say goodbye I can't seem to say goodbye... I try and try But I can't say goodbye...

WHY DON'T CHA (WORDS & MUSIC: T. EPSTEIN & J. ANDERSON) Why don't cha love me like you used to do? Say the things that you know are true? Why don't cha love me like you used to do, why don't cha? If you just love me, it'll be alright Every day and every night If you just love me it'll be alright, so why don't cha? Livin' here with me used to be just fine You never stayed out late, you were always kind Our lovemaking was just divine But when you got liberated it changed your mind Now you talk, talk, talk on the telephone Goin' out with your friends, leavin' me all alone Your nasty friends are makin' their time And yourself is all you think about my, me, mine Every day, every way...

LIFE IS A MOVIE (WORDS AND MUSIC: G. NOLL) Drama Queen on Silver Screen, you play the part so well With all your Technicolor fantasies, faded jeans and black sunglasses Silver Spoons bring Cocaine Blues, so lonesome I can tell But when the day is done, you'll start over again Don't look now You're in the lost and found When are you gonna turn yourself around? Life is a movie, and baby, you're the star All the vampires out in Hollywood know about you Life is a movie, entertaining and bizarre Just a freakshow, and the freaks have come To doubt you But they can't live without you... Rock 'n' Roll and Picture Shows, your party never ends Vaseline and Shiny Cars, rubber tips on whips 'n' chains Movie Stars and Loud Guitars, the faith that you defend And tomorrow night you'll do it all again Don't look down It's too late to find your way out When are you gonna turn yourself around? Reality holds no appeal for a girl like you You're so afraid you'll fall asleep and miss your cue Lights! Camera! Action! Don't look now You're face down on the cold, hard ground When are you gonna turn yourself around?

DIE TRYING (1985) (words and music : G. Noll) I saw a ritual on Saturday A ceremony that blew me away It reminded me of you I thought of lovers left so long ago Gone, like leaves that scatter when the wind blows And the winter comes too soon I know those days are gone forever But I learned long ago, never say never "nowhere to run, you've had your fun, boy" Maybe I can't bring back yesterday- "know when to run, it's all said and done, boy" Maybe I can't bring back yesterday- But I'll die trying Remember L.A.in eighty-five? We were so bent, you could hardly drive It's a wonder we're still here With glasses full and the music loud Set out to conquer with a wall of sound We were in rare form that year

SALAD BOWL (WORDS: J. ANDERSON/ MUSIC; G. NOLL) No good 'ol boys to entertain The troops are gone, you're goin' insane Your head's still searchin' for the signs of life Hear a far off sound, see a dull, dim light The wind won't blow, the waves don't break Your radar scan shows an old mistake You can't keep talkin' 'cause you're outta lies Praised by the zombies that you hypnotized They're less than perfect, but you can't see They're less like you and more like me Everyday people deserve a shout It won't cost you much, it won't turn you out When you deal the bullshit day in & out Start getting' shaky, you begin to doubt There's a lot of red, and a little green It's rather unsightly and very unclean You can't relax, 'cause you'll lose control You're so afraid this thing will swallow you whole The time has come for you to let it all go And mix it up good in the salad bowl You want a perfect world, but it don't work that way You gotta give & take to keep the fear at bay Got your chunks & fragments, curly & straight You're not in a hurry, but you just can't wait Throw in some yellow, mix in some blue There's a little of me, and too damned much of you You'll ignore the trouble, but you don't know When it might surface and when it might show Choppin', slicin', shreddin', dicin'

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE BLUES (WORDS & MUSIC: J. ANDERSON) The rent is due, I just got paid At a club down the street, I lost everything I made South Lake Tahoe, it's cold outside and gray I tried to call you on the phone, But there's nobody home today I got no place to go, no promises to keep I've got no one to love, and I haven't all week South Lake Tahoe, looks like summer's gone away I wanna talk to you, baby, but there's nobody home today It's five a.m. In the morning by my coffee cup I'm sittin' here at Sambo's watchin' the sun come up South Lake Tahoe, winter's here to stay Got a dime for the phone, but there's nobody home today
